Whether you're lacing up your first pair of skates or already playing on a team, these tips will level up your game!
The secret to skating fast is keeping your knees bent! It gives you power, balance, and helps you change direction quickly. Straight legs = slow skating!
Watch where you're going, not the puck! Great players feel the puck without looking down. Practice skating in a straight line while looking up at a target.
Your top hand controls the stick, your bottom hand guides it. Hold firmly but not too tight โ imagine holding a small bird: firm enough it can't fly away, gentle enough you don't hurt it!
Learning to use the inside and outside edges of your skate blades is the key to turning and stopping. Try figure-8 patterns during warmup to build edge skills.
Hockey is a team sport! A well-placed pass beats a blocked shot every time. Look for open teammates before deciding to shoot. Crisp, flat passes are easier to receive.
Great goalies track the puck at all times, stay in their crease, and keep their hands ready. Practice the T-push to move side to side quickly without crossing your feet!
๐ Deep Sea Knowledge
Did you know these amazing facts about hockey and the deep sea creatures that inspire us?
A real giant Pacific octopus โ Seattle's ocean neighbor โ has 8 arms, each with up to 280 suckers. That's 2,240 suckers total!
An ice hockey puck is frozen before games! Freezing the puck makes it slide more smoothly and predictably on the ice surface.
A slap shot can reach speeds over 100 miles per hour โ faster than most cars drive on the highway. Wear your helmet, kids!
An NHL rink holds about 10,600 gallons of water frozen into ice. The ice is only about 1 inch thick โ very precise to skate on!
Giant squids have the largest eyes of any animal โ up to 10 inches across! That's great for spotting a puck in the dark ocean deep.
The Stanley Cup has been used as a cereal bowl, a champagne glass, and even a baptismal font by winning players. It's one of sports' most storied trophies!
